Wow. I can’t believe it has been 6 years since I've posted here. So much has happened. There was a pandemic that killed over 1 million Americans; I got married; Purchased a new home and set up a printshop in the basement. I even got new jobs. 2020 feels like a lifetime ago.
Since 2020 I have actually started to create art more, but the consistency has been lacking. I could go months without even entering my studio. But I’ve kept working on the found-vintage-photo Lino-cut series. I also started working on copper intaglio and attempting to learn photogravure. However, earlier in the year I made a resolution to create a solid art practice and work regularly toward applying to a graduate program at the ripe age of 50… and with that I found a call for entries that was literally perfect- It was a printmaking show based on prints that push the boundaries of the media. One of my new prints was accepted. It felt like one of those moments where you just kind of know something is going to work out, but also don’t want to get your hopes up. It was so validating toward my new goal.
And for a few months I was regularly creating. I’ve even joined a makerspace to try and work out some laser engravings using a resist. But then a month passed and I ended up wasting weekends without any progress. Having art siloed to weekends has been the hardest hurdle. My 9-5 is exhausting. By the weekend I really just want to shut off and relax. I think balancing my job and artistic life has felt impossible.
A few weeks ago I finally started joining a life drawing group in Iowa City. It reminded me of how I felt when I first started pursuing art in community college. It felt fresh and exciting. I could see again, in realtime, that I am actually good at this thing and it is worth pursuing.
I’d like to start posting my work here.
